The coalition Government recently introduced the Fast-track Approvals Bill to parliament. If it becomes law, it would give extreme power to three Ministers to approve any major project, almost anywhere in the country, even on conservation land.
This could include mining, dams, waste incineration plants, highways and more through any community or any region, without any public consultation. It would give the government the power to completely side-step environmental protections and local community input.
The Beautification Trust strongly opposes this legislation. The Bill is a threat to nature, the climate, the survival of taonga species and our democratic principles in Aotearoa.
We made a submission to the Environment Select Committee in opposition to this Bill, and were recently invited to support this with an oral submission. Read our written submission and view our oral submission below.
Want to help us stop the Fast-track Approvals Bill?
At Aotea Square on Saturday, June 8, at 1 pm, join the Beautification Trust and a coalition of environmental organisations for the March for Nature, a peaceful protest against the Government’s reckless attacks on environmental protection. RSVP and get involved here.
